Seminar «Environmental issues of former uranium production»
On May 23, 2024, within the framework of WiN Tajikistans activities to encourage interest in STEM fields and environmental issues among young people, the leading researcher of the CBRN Safety and Security Agency of NAST, Ph.D. Khakimova Nodira Umarovna, conducted a seminar for high school students of School No. 20 named after A.S. Pushkin in Dushanbe.
The seminar was devoted to environmental issues associated with former uranium production wastes in the Sughd region, particularly in the city of Istiqlol. The schoolchildren were informed about the history of the uranium industry in Istiqlol (formerly Taboshar), methods of mining uranium ore, radioecological risks to the population and environment associated with uranium tailings, as well as measures taken for tailings rehabilitation.
The purpose of the seminar is to broaden the horizons of students in the field of radioecology, promote the formation of a deeper understanding of the essence of environmental problems, a responsible attitude towards nature, and stimulate the involvement in active actions to protect it. Also, an important goal was to interest high school students in exact sciences, since the work on training personnel for the CBRN Safety and Security Agency of NAST should starts in schools.
