Participation in the International Conference on Nuclear Security: Shaping the Future (ICONS-2024)
The delegation of Tajikistan led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan - Mr. Farrukh Sharifzoda participated in the International Conference on Nuclear Security:Shaping the Future (ICONS-2024) hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, on 20-24 May 2024.
He provided detailed information on the level of nuclear safety and security in the country, the measures taken by the Government of Tajikistan in this direction under the leadership of the founder of peace and national unity, leader of the country, President of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmon, and on Tajikistan's international cooperation with development partners.
At the conference, Prof. Ilhom Mirsaidzoda, Director of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Safety and Security Agency of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, outlined Tajikistan's extensive efforts to strengthen nuclear safety and security, including a comprehensive national needs assessment, the involvement of various government agencies, and significant changes in the regulatory framework. He provided details on the installation of modern equipment for detection of illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials at border crossings and international airports, and the importance of international cooperation in this field. Prof. Ilhom Mirsaidzod's presentation highlighted the important steps being taken by Tajikistan to ensure the strengthening of its nuclear safety and security infrastructure and capacity building.
The International Conference on Nuclear Security: Shaping the Future (ICONS-2024) is a major event in the field of nuclear security, attended by representatives of more than 178 IAEA Member States. It provides a framework for promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and strengthening the physical protection system at nuclear facilities.
