Official Ceremony of handing over equipment to SSI "Glasier Research Center of NAST"
On 19 January 2023, in the laboratory of water quality, isotopes and sanitation of the State Scientific Institution "Glacier Research Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan" (SSI "Glacier Research Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan") an official ceremony of handing over the laboratory equipment within the framework of technical cooperation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was held with the participation of Ilkhom Mirsaidzoda, Director of the Agency for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Safety and Security of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan (CBRN SSA NAST).
The Laboratory of Water Quality, Isotopes and Sanitation of the SSI "Glacier Research Centre of NAST" was established in cooperation with the IAEA and the CBRN Security Agency of ANT to study glaciers and snow cover, to observe and control their condition and to determine the hydrological composition of glacier water, lakes and glacier basins.
It should be noted that at the preparation procedure for the operation of laser equipment "Picaro" in the laboratory of water quality, isotopes and sanitation of the SSI "Centre for Glacier Studies of NAST" signed documents on the acceptance-transfer of equipment between the CBRN SSA NAST, and expressed interest in further expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation.
During the speech, the Director of the CBRN SSA NAST, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Ilhom Mirsaidzoda mentioned the initiatives of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmonthe on glacier conservation, as well as detailed the importance of declaring 2025 as the "International Year of Glacier Protection" noting that this initiative will contribute to greater involvement of the world community in addressing climate and glacier conservation issues.
Then, during the event, the Director of the State Scientific Institution "Centre for Glacier Studies of NAST" Professor Abdulhamid Kayumov noted that this laboratory will be created to implement the 5th initiative of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan dear Emomali Rahmon to declare 2025 "International Year of Glacier Protection" and will give a new impetus to the development and strengthening of glacier science in the Republic. Also in his speech, he noted that with the support of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Department and the CBRN SSA NAST, "Picaro" laser equipment will be activated in the Water Quality, Isotope and Sanitation Laboratory of the Centre, which will allow further innovative isotope studies of glaciers and snow cover.
Within the framework of this project, the staff of the Centre's Water Quality, Isotope and Sanitation Laboratory were trained for one month to master the methods of isotope studies of glaciers at the University of Innsbruck in the Republic of Austria.
Thus, it can be concluded that such a method of glacier research at the world level is extremely rare, and its introduction in the centre is an innovation and at the same time leads to the development of the science of glaciology, as well as to new ways of conducting glacier research, as it was implemented through the policy and current measures taken by the leadership of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in the field of glacier research and conservation.
