Technical workshop on Action Plan Development for public awareness on preparing to remediation works and stakeholders engagement
The technical workshop on action plan development for public awareness on preparing to remediation works and stakeholders engagement was organized in Guliston of Sughd region, between November 3-5, 2022. This workshop is part of continuation of the regional project “Stakeholders engagement for Uranium Legacy Remediation in Central Asia. Phase II”.
Staffs from the branch of the CBRN SSA in Sughd region, representatives from Istiklol town, B. Gafurov district, jamoat Goziyon, Adrasman village, UNDP and OSCE were participated in the technical workshop.
The deputy director, Akhmedov Matin, made a welcoming speech on behalf of the CBRN SSA NAST, noting the importance of the public awareness event prior to the start of remediation work at uranium legacy sites.
In his speech he noted that the contribution of representatives from Istiklol, B. Gafurov district, jamoat Goziyon and Adrasman village that are in the vicinity of uranium tailings are very important in developing action plan and briefly outlined the aims and objectives of this workshop.
Also welcoming remarks were made by Vladimir Lekarkin – UNDP Tajikistan, Dmitry Prudtskikh – OSCE, and other participants from Istiklol, B. Gafurov district, jamoat Goziyon and Adrasman village.
Then, the participants were given presentations on the following topics:
- Uranium legacy sites. Main problems.
- Regulatory legal base radiation safety and radioactive waste management area.
- Uranium legacy remediation projects.
After the presentations, the participants were asked to split into groups to develop action plan for public awareness on preparing to remediation works and stakeholders engagement, and progress its goals and objectives.
The session also included discussions on informing the public and stakeholders about tailings remediation, radiation safety, monitoring, and ways to resolve problems with the tailings remediation` in Sughd region. Ideas for improving of living conditions and social and economic problems in the regions where uranium legacy sites are located were also discussed.
At the end of the workshop, each group presented an action plan for preparing to remediation work and stakeholders engagement with focus on the regions mentioned above.
