A meeting of the Russian-Tajik (Slavonic) University students with the doctor of chemical sciences, academician Ulmas Mirsaidov
On November 18, 2021, a meeting of the Russian-Tajik (Slavonic) University students with the doctor of chemical sciences, academician Ulmas Mirsaidovich Mirsaidov took place. Students of chemical, physical, biological faculties, and international relations as well attended the meeting.
Ulmas Mirsaidovich made a presentation on the topic: "The formation and development of research in the field of radiation safety and radioecology in Tajikistan." In his speech, academician U.M. Mirsaidov spoke about the history of the creation of the USSR nuclear industry, methods of uranium mining and enrichment, about the problems of uranium tailings in Tajikistan. He also emphasized the history of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan (renamed 11/05/2021 into the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Safety and Security Agency (CBRN SSA)) and the main directions of its work:
- development of a regulatory framework in the field of nuclear and radiation safety;
- licensing;
- scientific research in the field of radiation safety (RS);
- radionuclide monitoring of the biological environment of Tajikistan;
- recycling of uranium ores and waste.
In his report, Ulmas Mirsaidovich paid special attention to research work carried out by the CBRN SSA on the processing of uranium ores and waste, the separation of uranium from natural uranium-containing waters, the recycling of uranium waste, as well as the ongoing radiation monitoring of the biological environment in Tajikistan.
The videos about the Agency and the problems of uranium tailings in Northern Tajikistan were demonstrated to students.
The Deputy Director of the CBRN SSA NAST, Ph.D. Matin Akhmedov were also made a presentation. The second speaker was the Head of Occupational Exposure Control Service Section at NRSA NAST, Ph.D. Nodira Khakimova, where she gave a detailed overview of the methods and detection devices used in radiation monitoring.
The meeting was interesting and informative, as evidenced by numerous questions from the students. They were interested in everything: from radioecological problems around tailings, participation of the population, NGOs, international organizations in solving these problems, the construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan, etc. to the possibility of getting a job after graduating from the university at CBRN SSA.
Students of the Russian-Tajik (Slavonic) University and administration expressed warm appreciation to academician U. Mirsaidov for the interesting lecture and the scientific works and books presented to the university as a gift.
These meetings of outstanding scientists and specialists with university students are very useful not only because they broaden their horizons, it helps the younger generation to choose a profession, but also serve as an example and incentive for achieving career goals.
