TAJIK-BRITISH PROJECT ON MODERNIZATION OF SAFETY AND SECURITY SYSTEM
On August 23, 2011, the Tajik-British project on modernization of safety and security system was delivered to the Republican Radioactive Waste Disposal Site (RRWPS), Faizabad District.
British Ambassador to Tajikistan - Travis Moore, IAEA representatives and Delegation of the Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI) of the United Kingdom and the United States attended the ceremony. Moreover, representative of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan - Khairullo Ibozoda, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Sherali Jononov, representative of the Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defense - Jamshed Kamalov, Chairman of the Fayzabad River - A. Khakimov, Director of NRSA – Academician Ulmas Mirsaidov have participated as well.
After the tour of the facility, jointly with the British delegation and Tajik officials, the technical staff showed to attended participants modernized systems of safety and security at the site.
The project was aimed at the adjustment of the RWPS safety and security system of radioactive materials by IAEA standards. The RWPS infrastructure has been significantly improved through the installation of CCTV cameras, intrusion sensors as ultraviolet and motion sensors, supervision of the RRWPS control zone through fiber-optic Internet from Dushanbe, construction of a new storage facility for RTG-s and other radioactive waste. Moreover, a central control station for the supervision of the entire territory of the controlled zone, a red power supply line for uninterrupted operation of modern equipment installed at the facility, a water supply line of the facility, and many others.
The project to modernize the RRWPS safety and security system amounted to 500 thousand euros, which were financed by the British Government through the IAEA budget. IAEA staff constantly monitored the progress of the project.
