The sudden death of Numonjon Khakimov, former Director at the Branch of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan in the Sogd region.
Numonjon Khakimov was one of the founders of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency, National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and worked as a director from 2004 – since the establishment of the Agency's Branch in the Sogd region until 2019.
After graduation from the Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology named after D.I. Mendeleev in 1968, he began his career at the Hydrometallurgical Plant of the Leninabad Mining and Chemical Plant (now known as the State Unitary Enterprise "Rare Metals of Tajikistan") in Buston. Over 34 years, he went from an ordinary employee to a director. During 13 years, he held the responsible position of director of the enterprise - the Hydrometallurgical Plant of the State Unitary Enterprise “Vostokredmet”, a reprocessing plant of uranium and gold ores.
During his tenure as director of the Agency's branch, he made great efforts to restore uranium ore tailings. During the period of activity of Numonjon Khakimov, all uranium industrial waste of the Sogd region was registered, which determined the amount of waste and radionuclide contaminated territories. Under his leadership, many uranium wastes were disposed in the Sogd region, and restoration work is underway in another part. Numonjon Hakimov was one of the specialists in the field of uranium processing, under whose leadership many Agency employees defended doctoral and PhD dissertations, including PhD and doctoral dissertations, defended by the current Director of the NAST Nuclear and Radiation Safety Agency Ilhom Mirsaizoda.
He was an eminent scientist, who has conducted many studies in the field of recycling uranium wastes and the extraction of uranium from technical waters, and mine, which have achieved significant results.
During his tenure, many significant processes have been carried out by him, especially the conduction of the licensing process for medical institutions and other enterprises using sources of ionizing radiation, moreover, the Sogd region radioecological map was developed, which has particular importance for the development of productive forces in the region.
The long-term work of Numonzhon Khakimov was highly appreciated in our country and abroad, he was awarded the medal "For Courage" (1975), the Certificate of Honor of the Republic of Tajikistan (1998), the medal "Veteran of the Atomic Industry of the Russian Federation" (1999).
Numonjon Hakimov took an active part in state affairs, and from 1995 to 2015, he was elected four times to the City Assembly of Buston (formerly Chkalov). In 2008, in recognition of his merits, he was awarded the title "Honorary Citizen of Chkalovsk." Scientists of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan recognized many years of scientific activity and research by Numonjon Khakimov, and in 2012, he was awarded the prize of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan named after S. Umarov. Besides, in October 2019, the leadership of the Agency Hakimov Numonjon was awarded the medal "15 years of meritorious service."
His death perceived as a great loss for the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan. The Agency for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan expresses its condolences to the family, friends and employees of the Agency's branch in the Sogd region, which he headed for many years.
